1992-1996

My father passed away unexpectedly when he was 64. These portraits of people with scarring are an attempt to mitigate his absence as well as to better understand, if only slightly, the mystery that we call mortality.

I placed ads in newspapers asking people with scars to call an answering service. As a result, I photographed strangers while conversing about the medical and philosophical issues they had been dealing with for some time. I continue to be grateful for the remarkable generosity of each of the subjects portrayed in this project.

I include the texts written by the subjects when I exhibit the photographs to provide some measure of their own voices.

“Mortal Desires” was supported in part by funding from the University of Vermont and by the Vermont Arts Council.
